Toro Z5000 Zero-Turn Riding Mower
Date Published: 3/19/07
Toro has three new zero-turn riding mower models. In the middle of the pack is the Z5000 (model 74370) with a strong engine and a wide cut for lawns up to three acres in size.
First, the engine is a 21-hp Kohler Courage twin-cam OHV power plant that is popular among mid-range riding mowers. With a cast-iron cylinder liner, full-pressure lubrication and a spin-on oil filter, it is more than up to the task of mowing three acres. The transmission is the popular dual hydrostatic type similar to that on other riders. You can turn the rear wheels individually using the steering controls and take the mower all over your yard without doubling back. There?s no wasted motion here.
The Z5000 is speedy, too, moving forward at up to 7 mph and in reverse at a top speed of 3.4 mph. You probably won't hit the max speeds unless your lawn is long and flat, but it's nice to have it when needed.
The cutting width is a cut above at 50 inches, which is on the wide side of most residential riders. That means you can reduce your cutting time by at least 25 percent over a 38-inch mower. Of course, the wider deck means you may not get it through a narrow yard gate, so be sure to measure first. Cutting height on this model is adjustable from 1-1/2 to 4-1/2 inches. The 4-inch-deep deck creates a slight vacuum that helps pull the grass blades straight for even cutting. The deck design also keeps grass flowing out of the side-discharge chute with less incidences of clogging.
Cut grass is sent out the side discharge chute. An optional 8-cubic-foot rear-mount twin-bagger is available as is the optional mulching kit, which Toro calls a Recycler Kit.
How does this model ride? As a smooth riding lawn mower should. Furthermore, the engine is quieter than many other two-cycle models, and the engine cover helps with that. The high-back seat is relatively comfortable, though adjustable arm rests are optional. It's a fine ride for the first hour. And with the wider cut you'll probably be done mowing by then.
Toro mowers are sold at many big-box home stores, which means that pricing can be competitive, and you may be able to find a good deal if you shop around. If you wait until the season's end, you can save even more. However, with a suggested retail price at just alittle less than three grand, the Toro Z5000 already is priced right -- especially for a zero-turn rider with a 50-inch cut.
We do like that the mower has a 3-year limited warranty rather than the 2-year warranties that most mowers carry. Service and parts are widely available for Toro products.
The Toro Z5000 has enough power and features to make fast work of lawns up to three acres and the maneuverability and comfort to make it almost fun.
Pros: Strong and proven engine, comfortable seat, nimble maneuvering, good warranty
Cons: Adjustable armrests are optional
Warranty
3 years, limited
