Toro LX426 lawn tractor

Date Published: 4/7/08

The Toro LX426 lawn tractor is a strong, dependable mowing machine for the entry-level consumer. Packed with all the features you need to get the job done, this tractor is a trim little machine that offers consistent performance. Since it doesn't include a lot of the bells and whistles found in other models, Toro is able to keep the price and weight of this machine lean, making it a good buy for those who don't mind forgoing a luxury or two.

The LX426 comes with plenty of performance-oriented features. A cast-iron front axle provides a long life and stability on slopes, while the Toro's linear balancing system helps ease side-to-side motion. A three-gallon fuel tank allows you to stay out in the field for quite some time.

The LX426 is tremendously easy to control. The CVT automatic transmission with cruise control has a comfortable foot pedal and brake system that are intuitive to use and offer steady command over speed, both forward and reverse. The controls used to switch direction and lower the cutting deck are very easy to operate.

We feel the LX426 falters slightly in the design of its seat and console areas. The seat is fairly hard and the springs don't add much shock absorption, resulting in a rougher ride than you'll find on other models. We feel that the seat is oddly close to the steering wheel, which in turn feels lower than normal. Combine these concerns with the low seat back and you have the makings of a rather uncomfortable ride. The controls -- which are smooth and simple for the most part -- don't look very solid, and setting the parking brake can be a problem. What's more, the 13-inch steering wheel seems awfully small for a lawn tractor. These problems may seem minor, but if you're planning on riding on uneven ground for extended periods of time, you may want to venture over to a different model for an upgrade in comfort.

Toro offers several attachments that are compatible with the LX426, including a mulching kit, a twin-bag grass collector, a snow thrower and a snowplow. Toro's attachment prices tend to be a little higher than average, however; this is something to consider if you are looking to utilize your lawn tractor for purposes other than mowing.

In all, the LX426 is a solid machine. It performs well, is easy to use and has a sleek-looking frame. Its compact size and 42-inch cutting deck work well for yards with tight spots and for riders with smaller frames. Is it the lawn tractor you should use for long hauls in uneven ground? Maybe not, but it serves as a fine entry-level mower.

Pros: Compact size, simple controls, good safety features, AVS linear balancing system, deck washout port
Cons: Lackluster control panels, hard seat, uncomfortable steering wheel, somewhat weak engine, expensive attachments
