TiVo TCD649180 Series2 DVR

Date Published: 4/23/08

The TiVo TCD649180 Series2 DVR is a step up from the TCD649080. Like that model, the TCD649180 has a dual tuner to record two different shows at the same time, although the second tuner is limited to recording content airing on basic analog cable. On the other hand, the TCD649180 offers a much larger hard drive capable of storing up to 180 hours of standard-quality programming.

For the additional storage capacity, the TCD649180 costs about $100 more than the lower-end model. As with any TiVo DVR, you'll also need to factor in the subscription cost of the TiVo service. Without that, the TCD649180 is about as useful as a cell phone without a wireless network. Depending on the length of the plan for which you sign up, the monthly TiVo subscription fee currently varies from $12.95 to $16.95. Alternately, you can prepay for 1 or more years at a discounted rate. Activating the subscription enables the familiar TiVo features like the ability to pause live TV, instantly replay a favorite moment and skip through recorded or buffered commercials.

The TCD649180 offers handy features such as Season Pass, which enables you to automatically record every episode of your favorite shows, and WishList, which finds and records programming according to title, actor or director. It isn't quite as flexible as DirecTV's search capabilities, but the TiVo produces more accurate and reliable results than the DirecTV search.

TiVo's electronic program guide is simple to use and quick to navigate. Particularly impressive is the Online Scheduling function, which enables you to program your TCD649180 from any computer with Internet access. For example, if you have to work late or get caught in traffic on the way home, you can use your PDA or office PC to ensure that you won't miss your favorite show. The inclusion of Ethernet and USB connections enables the TiVoToGo feature, letting you transfer recorded shows to your laptop or handheld device so you can watch them anywhere.

The additional cost of this model makes the lower-capacity unit a better value, but if you have the budget and an insatiable TV addiction, the TiVo TCD649180 Series2 is a simple-to-use and feature-rich DVR.

Pros:  Large 180-hour storage capacity, dual tuner can record two programs simultaneously, Ethernet and USB ports for excellent networking
Cons:  Can't record HD programming, dual tuner limited to analog cable service, expensive
