Unlike earlier Series2 models, the TiVo TCD649080 DVR can record to two different shows at the same time, a feature that was previously unique to the DirecTV DVR units. Unfortunately, the convenience of this feature is severely limited due to the fact that the second tuner can only record shows on basic analog cable. The TCD649080 is optimized for cable users and offers enough storage capacity to save up to 80 hours of your favorite TV shows at the standard-quality setting or 13 hours at the highest DVD-quality mode.

The TCD649080 offers all the usual TiVo options, such as the ability to pause live TV for up to 30 minutes, fast-forward through commercials, rewind the action to catch a snippet of missed dialogue or instantly replay a scene or sporting moment. As with other TiVo models, this unit has an extremely user-friendly menu and onscreen display. Navigating the electronic program guide is simple, whether you're selecting programs to record or using one of the advanced TiVo features such as Season Pass, WishList or Search by Title. Season Pass lets you automatically record every episode of a program whenever it is broadcast. WishList allows you to search and record shows according to actor, director or genre, and Search by Title helps you find a show whether you know all or only part of the title.

If you have multiple Series2 TiVos in your house, you can utilize the Multi-Room Viewing function. This lets you access recorded material from any other TiVo in the home, provided they are networked together. If you start watching a recorded show on the TiVo in the living room, for example, then want to watch the rest from the comfort of bed, the TCD649080 can simply transfer the unviewed material to the TiVo in the bedroom. Add the TCD649080 to your wired or wireless network and you can remotely program the Series2 to record, simply by accessing the TiVo website.

Of course, without a TiVo subscription, the functionality of the TCD649080 is extremely limited, and at a minimum of $12.95 per month (lifetime subscriptions are also available), the service is not cheap. Despite this, the TiVo TCD649080 Series2 is a fine DVR, offering solid performance and a host of easy-to-use features.
