TiVo TCD648250B Series3 HD DVR

Date Published: 2/15/08

The TCD648250B is TiVo's first Series3 model, and it is also TiVo's first HD DVR and the first THX-certified DVR. If you're looking to view recorded material in its native HD format, the TCD648250B delivers top-quality video and audio, far superior to any generic cable-provider DVR. However, despite the performance and typical user-friendly operation of this TiVo, there are some notable drawbacks.

For starters, the TCD648250B retails for $800, which is expensive for any DVR, especially when you consider that some cable companies offer them for free. In addition, while future upgrades will likely add features to the TCD648250B, it currently doesn't offer some key Series2 capabilities such as TiVoToGo and the Multi-Room Viewing function.

Since the TCD648250B cannot be directly connected to a cable box, it requires two CableCARDs supplied by your cable company. While obtaining cards from some cable companies is hassle-free, others require that their technicians install the cards themselves. You are then charged for the privilege. Using CableCARDs also means that the TCD648250B cannot access pay-per-view or on-demand programming, at least not yet. Therefore, we recommend you consult your cable company before committing to this DVR.

The TCD648250B offers the usual TiVo features such as the ability to pause live TV and use instant replay. The dual tuner lets you record two different shows while simultaneously watching a third that you've already recorded. The unit also offers TiVo features such as Season Pass, WishList and a detailed search function. The electronic programming guide is as simple and intuitive to use as ever. While TiVoToGo and Multi-Room Viewing are not yet available, the handy Online Scheduling function is. This enables you to program the TCD648250B remotely from any computer with an internet connection.

The picture and sound quality of the TiVo TCD648250B Series3 is undoubtedly superior to any DVR we've seen before, but that performance comes at a cost, both in terms of money and the omission of key Series2 features.

Pros:  Top-quality video and audio, huge storage capacity, THX-certified, dual tuner records two programs simultaneously, Ethernet and USB connectivity
Cons:  Expensive, currently lacks Series2 features such as TiVoToGo and Multi-Room Viewing, can't be directly connected to a cable box

Warranty
90 days labor, 1 year parts
