THQ Juiced racing video game

Date Published: 2/13/08

There are a variety of racing games hitting the market this year, from true-to-life simulators to more arcade-inspired video racers where it's all about the action, and that's THQ Juiced. It is an enjoyable tour through the world of street racing.

Juiced comes late to the party, originally slated to be released by the now defunct publisher Acclaim. THQ ended up releasing the racing video game, in an ironically retooled and "juiced up" version of its former self.

The video game's career mode has you putting pink slips on the line against other street racers, souping up your vehicle with your winnings after a race, and generally trying to build up both your street cred and your ride. Once both have been sufficiently juiced, you'll start to unlock other racing cars that you can eventually add to your stable. A cool feature THQ allows is the ability to place bets--you can bet against racers you're driving against or even put money down on a race you're not participating in.

There's a team-based aspect to the career mode, letting you send other drivers out to compete in additional races as you acquire more vehicles and fill up your own racing calendar.

The racing itself has a bit of a learning curve, and although the computer helps you out with braking advice, it's best not to listen too closely (as it's often dead wrong). In addition to the career mode, there's an arcade mode for some quick racing action and a variety of multiplayer modes, including split-screen (on console) and online. You can also play for pink slips against other gamers on the Net, and the high risk versus reward factor adds much to a race.

Graphically, the game video looks quite nice with excellent reflective effects on the cars and some unique backgrounds for the tracks. THQ's audio is impressive as well, with a well-chosen score adding to the intensity of the races.

Juiced isn't that different from the other street racers available now, but it holds its own in terms of features and online gameplay. If you're a fan of street racing, vehicle modding, and engine tuning, THQ Juiced has all the elements in a video game required to make for an enjoyable driving experience.

Pro: Fun action racing, can gamble on the races
Con: AI driving/braking advice often wrong
