The North Face Spectrum 23 three season/convertible tent
Date Published: 6/15/06
The North Face Spectrum 23 is a three season/convertible tent designed to provide ultralight shelter for two people, even under extreme conditions. This is a three season/convertible tent, but be aware that it is a single-wall tent, which limits its use in hot climates. This tent was tested in a wind tunnel to wind speeds of 130 mph; its streamlined contour certainly helps it to avoid wind, and also helps shed snow and rain.
The tent is also ingeniously ventilated to minimize condensation; there are both low perimeter vents and a top vent that acts as a chimney; air can move across the tent and upward and outward. Of course, the vents are specially designed to keep out inclement weather; the top vent can be zippered shut. The top vent is supported with two aluminum "nano knuckles" on the cross pole; this also adds structural stability to the tent. The tent is hung from clips, as well as continuous pole sleeves. Somewhat uniquely for an ultralight tent, the Spectrum 23 features a roomy pullout vestibule. The color-coded aluminum DAC poles use different diameters. The canopy uses silicone treated nylon and is seam sealed for waterproofing. The nylon taffeta floor is taped. There is one D-shaped door. Niceties include reflective guy lines and zipper cording. A compression stuff sack is included.
The TNF Spectrum 23 is a rather unique three season/convertible tent; it uses single-wall construction to reduce weight, but solves ventilation issues through clever venting design. Add in its wind-resistant design, and the result is an ultralight tent that really works--provided the two occupants don't mind sleeping very close together. The Spectrum 23 is also available as the Spectrum 33 that sleeps three people.
