The North Face Recon II daypack backpack is probably best suited for urban adventures, but it is equipped with enough technical features to let it double as a bona fide hiking backpack.

As with most daypack backpacks, the Recon II uses a classic panel-loading design that allows easy access to the entire main compartment. A front compartment contains an organizer for neatly storing small items such as pens, cell phones, MP3 players, and so on. A small front stash pocket holds other small items; it is secured with a water resistant zipper. There is also a padded compartment in the back of the main compartment; it offers protection to a laptop stowed there, or since there is a drinking tube port, it cleverly doubles as a hydration pocket (hydration reservoir sold separately).

A front mesh pocket holds larger items such as a bike helmet; it buckles shut and has a reflective stripe for safety. As in most daypack backpacks, there are mesh pockets on each side; these can hold water bottles and the bottles can be secured with cord locks. A webbing waist belt can be used when carrying heavier loads, or the belt can be tucked away. Side compression straps and bottom straps help secure loads. The shoulder straps are S-curved and padded and there is a sternum strap as well. The back panel is padded and uses a laminated, breathable mesh material.
