The North Face Catalyst 60 technical backpack
Date Published: 2/23/06
The Catalyst 60 from The North Face is a medium-capacity, high-performance backpack with the unique Pivotal Suspension system that is designed for more natural and unimpeded movement.
The grey and black pack (or green and black) uses a top-loading design, coupled with D-zip side panel access; this is useful for finding items at the bottom of the pack. Conveniently, there is also a mesh pocket on the inside of the D-zip panel. There is also a sleeping bag compartment with a collapsible divider and side access. The top lid can be removed and used as a hip pack. The main pack contains a hydration sleeve (reservoir sold separately), and drinking tube port.
The back panel uses molded foam that is breathable, and "flex arms" extend from a pivoting link to equally distribute pack load to the center of the hips. Torso length is adjustable, and the hip belt is interchangeable. Other features include dual compression side straps, daisy chain, and side water bottle pockets with elastic to secure the bottles.
The Catalyst 60 is a full-featured pack designed to carry moderately heavy loads with comfort. It is a good choice for weekend or multi-day hiking in rugged conditions.
