Summit All-in-One Washer/Dryer SPWD1160C

Date Published: 5/20/08

Summit's little washer/dryer combination, the SPWD1160C, is one of a number of small units on the market that washes and dries clothing all in the same drum. It's sold by retailers in large urban areas and is available online. Designed for use in apartments, condos and aboard ships, this machine gets a minimal amount of laundry done in a minimal amount of space.

The washer function on the SPWD1160C utilizes an onboard heater for getting water to the right temperature. The benefit here is very hot water, which means better cleaning power. Additionally, this heater prevents the washer from draining the hot water supply in your home. With this little unit, you can take a shower while it runs and never run out of hot water.

Although the capacity of this model is quite small (11 pounds), it is fairly versatile. The choice of cycles is sufficient for washing most household articles -- even if only a few at a time. Three water level options give you a means to control water usage. The no-spin setting allows you to wash handwashables as long as you don't mind hand wringing them.

When it comes to drying your clothes, things are a bit more challenging. Equipped with a condensation dryer, the SPWD1160C takes a long time to complete a drying cycle -- especially if you are accustomed to a vented dryer. For that reason, we recommend considering this model only if you have no way to vent a more traditional dryer.

Lastly, we do have some concerns about the reliability of this model. Reports of the need for service have been frequent as has been the lack of availability of essential parts. For more information on the European-made Summit SPWD1160C, we suggest you contact the US supplier, Felix Storch located in Bronx, NY.

Pros: Fits a really small space, has an onboard heater, is Energy Star qualified
Cons: Very small capacity, slow drying, parts availability and service are concerns
