Stihl MS 270 C-B gas chain saw
Date Published: 4/23/07
The Stihl MS 270 C-B, with its 3.4-bhp gas engine and an optional 16- or 20-inch bar, should satisfy demanding homeowners who use their chain saws often and for big jobs. This model combines power with Stihl technology and reliability.
The Stihl MS 270 C-B offers many of the same features as Stihl's professional saws. It uses an anti-vibration system, tool-less fuel and oil caps with retainers, and tool-less chain adjustment. The carburetor includes a preheat shutter for adjusting to weather conditions, and it keeps the saw running smoothly even when the filter begins to clog. The rugged flat-bottomed polymer body housing resists impact and won't rust.
The MS 270 C-B doesn't include the Easy2Start spring-assisted starting system that some other Stihl models offer, which makes these other models very easy to start. The trade-off is more power and a longer bar for the MS 270 C-B. We found it started reliably and ran quite smoothly. With Stihl's increased power and longer bar, we were able to cut more quickly and to buzz through larger and harder wood. The 270 C-B is heavier and therefore somewhat more awkward to use, but it is still well balanced. The two-cycle gas engine offers total portability, so we could throw the saw in the truck and cut firewood in remote areas. We like the Stihl technology and reliability in this powerful homeowner model. But it's noisy and a bit heavy.
This saw includes several standard Stihl safety features, including handle guards, a chain catcher and a throttle trigger interlock that must be depressed before the trigger is activated. The 270 C-B weighs 11.9 pounds without bar, and can be fitted with 16 to 20-inch bars. The MSRP of $369.95 includes a 16-inch bar and chain.
If you want a powerful, smooth-running homeowner saw based on proven professional saw technology, look at the Stihl MS 270 C-B gas chain saw. You won't be disappointed.
Pros: Powerful, reliable, smooth running
Cons: Noisy, requires mixed fuel, rather heavy
