The Stihl HS 45 gas hedge trimmer features Stihl quality in a residential-use hedge trimmer. The HS 45, powered by a 1.01-hp gas engine, comes with either 18 or 24-inch hardened blades. We tested the 18-inch version.
The dual-action hedge trimmer blades and anti-vibration system ensure limited vibration. The double-sided blades provide efficient cutting action in both directions. The high-torque engine and heavy-duty gearbox mean plenty of power and a long life for this model. A front handle with hand guard lets you maneuver the Stihl HS 45 into various positions for cutting.
After priming, the HS 45 started easily for us. All the controls are conveniently located on the comfortable ergonomic handle. The unit feels solid and well balanced. One filling of the 7.8-ounce fuel tank let us complete a lot of trimming in about 40 minutes run time. We liked the double-sided blades for their efficiency in cutting in either direction. And with the two comfortable handles, we were able to cut with the unit turned to either side as well. The anti-vibration system works. Thanks to all these features, we were not overly fatigued at the end of our chores. And the results were aesthetically pleasing with nice clean cuts to our plants.
The Stihl HS 45 air filter is easy to reach and clean and the translucent fuel tank makes it easy to monitor fuel level. The blades include an integrated cutter guard for safety. Storage is efficient if you use the built-in hanger on the rear handle.
If you have lots of bushes and/or hedges to trim, the Stihl HS 45 is a good workhorse. It offers power, maneuverability, and ease-of-use in a well-constructed unit. If you need a longer reach, you can opt for the 24-inch blade, at $20 more; the 18-inch version weighs 10.1 pounds and the 24-inch version weighs 10.8 pounds.
Pros: Powerful, well-balanced, solid construction
Cons: Requires mixing fuel, noisy, price
