Stihl FSE 60 electric string trimmer

Date Published: 7/21/08

The Stihl FSE 60 trimmer has some mighty big footsteps to follow in. It's only natural that homeowners will compare the company's single electric trimmer offering with its gas-powered tools. The good news is the FSE 60 can go head-to-head with Stihl's other occasional-use tools -- as well as many other electric models in its class. The chief downside? At around $110, it's more than twice as expensive as many of the other electric trimmers on the market.

Sure, you're giving up the portability and some of the power of a gas-powered trimmer, but this model offers a few perks that gas-powered units can't. As with all corded trimmers, the Stihl FSE 60 lets you tackle small to moderate backyard jobs without having to worry about gas or oil, and starting is as simple as flipping a switch. It's also considerably quieter than most gas units. This model's design keeps the noise level less than 60 dB, equivalent to the hubbub in an average office. (You'd be lucky to find a gas-powered trimmer that kicks off less than around 75 dB.)

This model is powered by a respectable 5.5-amp motor, which is mounted on the top of the unit. It provides a feel and level of balance that's similar to a gas-powered trimmer, which is extra helpful during long trimming sessions. At 9 pounds, it's not much lighter than many gas-powered models, though.

One of this model's top features is its EasySpool cutting head. It makes replacing line about as simple as it gets: You just insert new line into the eyelets and turn the spool knob to remove the slack. The 14-inch cutting swath is wider than most, and lets you plow through grass and weeds faster than many smaller units.

The Stihl FSE 60 electric trimmer comes with a built-in hanger and a cord keeper. The cord system is a nice feature, but we'd like to see a longer pigtail cord to give you more slack when attaching it to an extension cord. This model also comes with a strap fastener, loop handle and protective glasses. The Stihl FSE 60 electric trimmer is covered by a 2-year consumer warranty.

Pros: Low noise, easy line replacement, wide cutting width
Cons: Price, weight

Warranty
1 year, commercial use; 2 years, residential use
