This 27.2cc machine is also designed with the Stihl Easy2Start system, which uses dual-spring technology to make starting this machine fast and practically effortless for anyone: simply lock the trigger, pump the bubble and turn the switch to on. A gentle pull of the starting cord winds the second spring, which reduces the resistance and jerking typically felt as compression is created in the engine's cylinder. The comfortably large and easy-to-grip adjustable handle is another feature that Stihl has designed with smoother operation in mind.

We like the FS 45 C-E's design, which is smooth, clean and ergonomic from top to bottom. For starters, the spark arrestor muffler is designed to reduce the machine's noise level and the emission of sparks. Additionally, removing the air filter is fast and easy. This model also features translucent fuel tank, so you can visually check the fuel level before you start trimming. The curved driveshaft is fully lined, which produces less vibration and provides smoother operation; this is a difference you can feel and really appreciate when using the trimmer. We also like the 2-line AUTOCUT trimming head, which advances a pre-measured length of line when you tap the head on the ground. You don't even need tools to change the string.

All in all, we find the Stihl FS 45 C-E gas string trimmer to be well balanced, easy to handle, easy to start and an all-around good performer. And if you live in California, you can purchase a version of this machine with a catalytic muffler, which is another point in its favor.
