Sony STR-DG510
Date Published: 1/30/08If you can find a receiver that gives you HDMI connectivity for less than $300 it's a really good deal, which makes that fact the Sony offers HDMI connectivity in the STR-DG510 for less than $200 pretty amazing. If you're in the market for an A/V receiver that allows you to connect two HDMI video sources to your display, you should definitely include this receiver on your short list to audition.
The STR-DG510 offers a total of 500 watts, 100 watts in 5 channels to rattle the windows in any home theater. Onboard Dolby Digital, DTS, and Dolby Pro Logic II (movie and music) processing gives you access to the surround sound soundtrack for all the movies in your home collection, as well as an additional 6 DSP modes to give you access to surround sound options for older movies or analog music sources. The receiver does not offer any multi-channel music capabilities; however, for the price, we found it difficult to be too disappointed. For 2-channel music lovers, the analog direct mode amplifies the music source without any processing.
This receiver really impressed us when it comes to options for hooking up video components to your display. Two HDMI inputs and one HDMI output on the rear panel allow pass through of up to 1080i video signals. The HDMI connections are pass-through only, and require connection of the digital audio output from the source to the A/V receiver inputs. There are also two component video inputs and one component video output available that can pass HDTV signals. The rear panel also contains two optical and one coaxial assignable digital audio input. The subwoofer pre-out allows you to connect a powered subwoofer to handle LFE.
To make all these features and power easier to set up and operate for the beginner home theater enthusiast, Sony has also included Digital Cinema Auto Calibration (with an included microphone) to help with speaker set up. The A/V Sync helps align audio and video signals if they get out of sync.
The feature set on the Sony STR-DG510 is very impressive, especially when taking the price tag into account. If your home theater needs include connecting 2 HDMI video sources to your display, you should definitely check this receiver out.
