Sony STR-DE197 stereo receiver
Date Published: 7/6/06
While it's getting harder to find dedicated stereo receivers among the sea of home theater audio/video receivers, the Sony STR-DE197 is worth seeking out.
This capable, if basic, model pushes 100 watts into two channels, with a frequency response of 20Hz to 50,000Hz. There are four audio inputs, but it should be noted that there is no phono input. The STR-DE197 has source naming, so each individual audio source can be titled, and even favorite radio stations can be named. The AM/FM tuner has direct access tuning and presets for up to 30 stations.
The STR-DE197 can switch between two speaker systems, with A/B speaker settings on the front panel. A headphone jack provides a third listening option. The included remote control can operate many other Sony components, and it is programmable and customizable. Unlike most high-end receivers, the STR-DE197 uses spring-clip terminals instead of the more secure binding post terminals.
The use of spring-clip terminals is forgivable, because at this price, the Sony STR-DE197 represents a competent performer and a very good value.
