Sony STR-DA7100ES A/V receiver
Date Published: 1/8/08
The STR-DA7100ES is Sony's top-of-the-line receiver in its highly regarded ES (Elevated Standard) product group, and with its list of features, it is easy to see why it occupies that perch.
The STR-DA7100ES is a 7.1 channel receiver that produces a huge 170 watts per channel, and it sports a pre-amplified subwoofer output. The unit has processing for multiple 5.1, 6.1, and 7.1 surround formats, including Dolby Digital EX, DTS ES, and DTS 96/24.
One of the STR-DA7100ES's most impressive features is its HDMI inputs and outputs, which offer direct digital-to-digital, uncompressed audio/video connections in a single cable.
The receiver has audio for two zones, so two sets of speakers can be set up (say one in the family room and one in the den), and it can even route an audio source (pre-amplified) to a third location. There is an iLink input for high-resolution digital audio players such as SACD and DVD-Audio.
In addition to the analog audio inputs for SACD or DVD-Audio, the STR-DA7100ES has five optical and three coaxial digital audio inputs. The unit also has an RS-232 interface and three triggers for custom home installations.
In addition to the main universal LCD remote control, this impressive receiver comes with additional remotes for the multizone locations.
The fact that Sony equipped this unit with HDMI repeater switching and 7.1 amplification means the STR-DA7100ES A/V receiver will not be obsolete for a long time to come.
