Sony SLV-D370P DVD/VCR Combination Unit
Date Published: 1/9/08
Whatever disc or tape you're looking to play, the Sony SLV-D370P DVD/VCR player can probably handle it. This combination unit is compatible with just about every format in common use today, and it comes at a very reasonable price.
In addition to standard DVD-Video, the disc side of the SLV-D370P is compatible with DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW, SVCD and VCD. The player's progressive scan playback delivers excellent video quality when connected to a digital TV via the component video output. The SLV-D370P also offers composite and S-video connections for analog TVs, and coaxial and optical digital audio outputs let you route surround sound data to a full-feature home theater receiver.
Even if your discs are not in pristine condition, the SLV-D370P can probably handle them. Sony's Precision Drive 3 system does a great job playing scratched, warped or otherwise damaged discs that other players often struggle to read. The unit is compatible with standard audio CD as well as CD-R/RW, including those loaded with MP3 and WMA digital music files. If you're looking to create a digital slideshow on your TV, simply insert a disc containing JPEG images.
The VCR side of the SLV-D370P is equally versatile. This unit is compatible with S-VHS tapes, playing them at the standard VHS resolution. In addition to letting you preserve your existing library of VHS tapes, the SLV-D370P provides a cheap and simple way to record your favorite TV shows, even while you're watching a DVD. The VCR playback and recording features include an automatic clock and channel set-up function, a 1-month/eight-event timer, an automatic head cleaner and a flash rewind function. A universal remote control is also included, but the crowded button layout can make it a pain to use.
Sleek and compact, the SLV-D370P is a reasonably priced DVD/VCR player that delivers excellent picture quality and great media compatibility.
Pros: Progressive scan DVD playback, quasi-S-VHS playback, broad disc compatibility, inexpensive
Cons: Small and cluttered remote
