Sony RDR-GXD455

Date Published: 3/21/08

If you are upgrading from a VCR to a DVD recorder for the first time, we recommend the Sony RDR-GXD455. In addition to a host of advanced features such as a built-in HDTV tuner, multiple disc compatibility and 1080i upconversion, the RDR-GXD455 offers an easy-to-use interface reminiscent of a VCR's. While that may not appeal to more experienced users, those buying a DVD recorder for the first time will appreciate the simplicity and familiar basic commands. The quick setup guide means even novice users to have the RDR-GXD455 up and running straight out of the box. The onscreen display quickly guides you through the steps to program recordings, while the one-touch dubbing feature makes it a breeze to transfer non-copyright protected content from VHS tape, a DV camcorder or another DVD player.

This single-deck DVD recorder offers a great deal of versatility in disc recording format. The RDR-GXD455 records to DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW and DVD+R format discs, including dual-layer DVD-R discs which double the amount of recording time. The unit is equipped with rigid copyright protections that will prevent you from recording content from some premium channels. While the RDR-GXD455 produced high-quality recordings, we did experience some problems making multiple copies of non-copyright protected content. The unit sometimes mistakenly identifies the discs as copyright protected, which can prove frustrating. As a DVD player, it will of course play back all the recording formats along with DVD-RAM discs, standard audio CDs and home recorded CD-R and CD-RW format discs, including those loaded with MP3 digital audio files. Insert a JPEG picture disc, and the GXD455 will display your photos directly on your TV screen.

The RDR-GXD455 will upscale standard DVDs to 720p or 1080i resolution when hooked up to a compatible HDTV via the unit's HDMI connection. The image quality from the up-conversion process is impressive. The built-in HDTV tuner delivers excellent images as well. The RDR-GXD455 will record HD programming, but only to standard definition. To record in HD, you will obviously need a Bluray recorder. The only minor glitch we detected in the ATSC tuner's performance was a slight lag time in changing channels. Overall, the Sony RDR-GXD455 is a high-quality DVD recorder ideal for those upgrading from a VCR for the first time.

Pros: Broad disc compatibility, built in HD tuner, 1080i upconversion, user friendly interface
Cons: Basic user interface, some erroneous copyright protection problems

1 year, parts and labor
