Sony PFM-42X1 42-inch plasma TV

Date Published: 10/26/07

The Sony PFM-42X1 is a 42-inch PlasmaPro TV that is equally at home in a living room or boardroom. Available with a black (PFM-42X1/B) or silver (PFM-42X1/S) frame around the wide-format display, this model can serve as the display for an HD receiver and/or computer, and it has a range of input options for use with other components as well. Wall mounting requires a separately available bracket, and a tabletop stand can be purchased separately. The PFM-42X1 is strictly a monitor with amplifier and remote, but users can add a TV tuner (ESB-SP10), speakers (SS-SP20B/B), and additional components to customize the system.

The PFM-42X1 has exceptional performance, with a resolution of 1,024X768 and high levels of brightness and contrast. Standard pictures are up-converted to progressive scan for a richer, more detailed picture, and the addition of an external HD receiver enables the display of high-definition content. One unusual feature is the option of viewing in a horizontal or vertical layout, which will accommodate some PC images.

The built-in amplifier produces 7 watts per channel of stereo output to connected speakers. Image burn-in can be a problem with plasma sets, so an integrated screen saver uses picture orbiting and picture inversion to prevent damage from static images. Three preset and two user-adjustable color temperature settings are present for quick adjustments, and five picture modes address the demands of standard and wide-format content. The on-screen display can be set up for use in six languages (English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, and Japanese). A zoom function makes it possible to get in close on a section of the screen, and additional convenience features include a sleep timer and closed captions.

The PFM-42X1's rear panel contains inputs to accommodate several connected devices, with a DVI interface, a VGA RGB input, an S-video input, and a composite video input, along with a serial control input. An audio/video output is present as well. The large remote is comfortably arranged and easy to handle. The warranty is especially generous, at 2 years for the system and 1 year for the screen.

Warranty
1 year parts and labor for screen, 2 years parts and labor for rest of system
