Sony MHC-GX355 compact stereo system
Date Published: 1/9/08
The Sony MHC-GX355 is a relatively low-cost minisystem that provides all the playback features most listeners will ever need, and it backs this up with a surprisingly powerful amplifier. The system begins with a compact three-disc CD changer with play exchange, so two discs can be swapped while the third continues to play. In addition to standard audio CD, the changer is also compatible with CD-R/RW, including discs loaded with MP3 files. In addition, the MHC-GX355 has a full-logic dual-transport cassette deck with synchro recording, as well as an AM/FM tuner with 20 FM and 10 AM station presets.
If CD, cassette, and radio aren't enough, the MHC-GX355 sports an audio line input for connecting a PC or portable music player for playback through the system. Other features include an eight-preset equalizer with three-band control, virtual surround sound, three timer modes, and a standard remote control. The amplifier is rated at 150 watts (average) into each of the stereo channels. The bass reflex speakers use a three-way design with a 2-inch tweeter, 5-inch midrange, and 5-inch woofer.
The MHC-GX355 hits a sweet spot among minisystems. For a relatively modest price, it provides CD changer playback along with MP3 decoding, a strong amplifier, and three-way speakers. That should be more than adequate for enjoyable music playback in the home or office.
