Sony MFM-HT75W 17-inch LCD TV

Date Published: 11/29/06

The Sony MFM-HT75W is a 17-inch HD-ready LCD TV and computer monitor that is well equipped for home theater use and PC/Mac compatibility. The silver monitor has a cool, compact design, with speakers located below the screen on a panel that slopes forward from the flat TFT active matrix display. A flip stand on the rear is removable for wall mounting (an additional bracket is required), and it can tilt the screen back by as much as 20 degrees. The viewing angle is 170 degrees horizontally and vertically, so the screen is viewable from virtually anywhere in the room.

With a resolution of 1,280X768, the MFM-HT75W can handle HDTV and computer content, and the contrast ratio of 800:1 ensures sharp edges and plenty of detail. Pictures from an HD tuner are displayed at 720p. The internal audio system includes twin stereo speakers rated at 3 watts per channel, plus a 5-watt subwoofer. The picture-in-picture feature can be used to monitor TV programs in a smaller window while viewing computer content, and the PIP window can be resized and relocated as needed.

A full range of input options is provided on the rear of the monitor, with a set of audio/video inputs, an S-video input, and a set of component video inputs, along with HD-15 and DVI inputs for use with a computer. A side headphone jack adds to the functionality, allowing users to listen in private without disturbing others. It should be noted that this set does not have an HDMI or DVI interface for use with an HD receiver.

A bonus with the MFM-HT75W is the 3-year warranty, which exceeds the warranties on most TVs on the market. The included remote control is comfortably designed for managing all of the TV's features and accessing the other connected video sources. A CD-ROM containing Windows and Macintosh monitor drivers and utilities are included in the package, along with PC cables and a power cord.
