Sony MEX-1GP car CD player with 1GB Flash memory
Date Published: 3/15/06
The Sony MEX-1GP Giga Panel will completely change the way you listen to music in your car. While most people accept toting around CD as a necessary evil, it clearly isn't the best thing for the discs. Connecting and disconnecting an MP3 player also introduces its own set of problems.
The MEX-1GP changes all that in a major way. In addition to the AM/FM tuner and CD player, which will also play MP3 files burned to disc, the MEX-1GP has 1GB of Flash memory integrated into the faceplate. This will store up to 500 songs, right in the head unit. The way the music is transferred into the memory is nothing short of brilliant. The removable faceplate has a USB port that connects to a computer. Bring the faceplate inside, connect it to a computer, and it shows up as an external drive. Simply drag and drop music files, be they MP3, WMA, or ATRAC3 and ATRAC3plus. The glossy black faceplate also has an LCD display that makes it easy to keep track of what music files are loaded.
The MEX-1GP has a built-in amplifier that provides 17 watts (continuous) into four channels (52 watts peak). There are two sets of 4-volt pre-amp outputs that are selectable between the rear channels or a subwoofer. When a subwoofer is selected, a crossover and independent volume control are activated. The Sony MEX-1GP is an innovative product that definitely keeps one step ahead of the technology curve.
