The 34-inch widescreen KV-34HS420 boasts the striking picture and loads of useful features we've come to expect from Sony's WEGA lineup. The flat Trinitron tube is housed in a silver cabinet, with flanking speakers and a door below the screen hiding front-panel inputs and controls.

The picture on the HD-ready KV-34HS420 has an intensity and sharpness that is impressive. Standard 480i signals are up-converted to 480p or 960i, providing a richer viewing experience when watching analog programming, while high-definition content is displayed at 1,080i (a separate HD tuner is required). A 3-D digital comb filter reduces dot crawl and rainbow effects, ensuring clear, detailed images. Transitions from dark to light are helped along by velocity scanning modulation, and movies are automatically adapted for optimal video viewing with reverse 3:2 pulldown conversion. Colors are rich and bright, with a menu to adjust the color temperature settings. The built-in stereo speakers are rated at 10 watts per channel, and simulated surround sound and automatic volume control are included.

The KV-34HS420 has four presets for video settings, memory for favorite channels, video and channel labeling, V-chip parental controls, and a two-event on/off timer. The inputs will accommodate a range of components, with a DVI input, two sets of component video inputs, three S-video inputs (one in the front), and four audio/video inputs (one front), along with fixed/variable audio outputs, a monitor output, and a Control S input/output.
