Sony KDS-R60XBR1 60-inch SXRD HDTV
Date Published: 10/26/07
The KDS-R60XBR1 is an exceptional 60-inch HDTV that uses Sony's rear-projection SXRD technology to produce a rich, highly detailed picture in a cabinet that measures just over 20 inches in depth.
The KDS-R60XBR1 is equally adept at displaying television programming, movies, and computer images. Sony's SXRD technology is a variation of liquid crystal on silicon, or LCoS, which is the screen type that provides very deep blacks but is a bit pricier. The wide-format screen has a black and silver border that projects the picture forward from the silver cabinet. A small door below the screen hides audio/video, S-video, and FireWire (IEEE 1394) inputs, and control buttons are lined along the side edge.
The KDS-R60XBR1 has a native resolution of 1,920X1,080, and the picture is enhanced to maximize the darkness of blacks and the brightness of colors. High-definition content is displayed at 1,080p, and all content can be up-converted to this level. The screen can show two full-height images side by side, among other PIP functions. The horizontal viewing angle of 130 degrees is decent, but not exceptional. The stereo speakers are rated at 15 watts of audio output per channel, with automatic volume control to eliminate the difference in volume between programs and commercials.
Just some of the KDS-R60XBR1's handy features are a favorite channel memory that can store up to 16 stations for quick access, picture-setting memory for each input, an adjustable sleep timer, and parental V-chip controls. A Memory Stick slot makes it easy to view digital photos and videos, and a built-in CableCARD slot has the potential to eliminate the cable box from a crowded home entertainment center.
The KDS-R60XBR1's collection of inputs is extensive. In addition to the front-panel inputs, the rear includes two RF inputs, two component video inputs, two audio/video/S-video inputs, two HDMI digital-to-digital audio/video connections, two FireWire (IEEE 1394) ports, and a PC input. An optical digital audio output can be used with a full-feature home theater receiver. The remote control is a long and slender design, with curved silver buttons and a slide panel hiding less frequently used buttons.
The Sony KDS-R60XBR1 is for those consumers who are willing to pay the price to step up to a big, flat set with an outstanding picture.
