Sony KDS-60A2000 60-inch 1,080p SXRD HDTV

For a stunning big-screen high-definition picture and a plethora of picture adjustment options, check out the 60-inch Sony KDS-60A2000. Unlike some projection TVs that use pixel-sharing or other techniques to achieve a 1,080p picture, this Grand WEGA HDTV uses Sony's proprietary SXRD technology (a variation of LCoS) to display every line of 1,080p.
The native resolution is 1,920X1,080, and all incoming signals are scaled to fit the screen. The KDS-60A2000 uses three SXRD chips, with each chip handling a separate primary color (red, blue and green), and there are none of the rainbow effects that can affect DLP televisions. In addition, there are numerous color and other picture settings for each input, including three color temperature settings, seven Advanced Iris settings that adjust brightness and contrast and multiple processing modes that address edge enhancement, detail enhancement and black and white levels. All adjustments can be made through an on-screen menu that, in typical Sony tradition, is effortless to navigate. This all amounts to a crystal-clear picture that can be easily fine-tuned to your exact color and processing preferences.
The KDS-60A2000 places its stereo speakers below the screen, which reduces the overall footprint. The speakers produce 12 watts of output per channel, which sounds clear but underpowered. Audio options include three presets for different types of content (dynamic, standard and custom), as well as simulated surround sound and automatic volume leveling. The audio can also be routed to a home theater receiver via the KDS-60A2000's optical digital audio output.
Sony has omitted some significant features on the KDS-60A2000 that may turn off potential buyers. While you can freeze a full-screen image into a split-screen window, there are no live-TV split-screen or PIP functions. The KDS-60A2000 has a QAM tuner for viewing unscrambled digital cable content (check with your provider for QAM compatibility), but it lacks a CableCARD slot for true digital cable readiness.
The rear of the KDS-60A2000 is loaded with input and output options, including a VGA PC input with audio that lets you browse the internet or play computer games on the big screen. Other rear-panel connections present are two composite video inputs, an S-video input, two component video inputs, two HDMI inputs compatible with 1,080p sources, the optical digital audio output and an analog audio output. The front panel also has additional composite and component video inputs.
Despite a recent price drop, the KDS-60A2000 is still relatively expensive in relation to comparable-size projection TVs. However, considering the excellent display quality, picture adjustment options and easy-to-navigate menus, the Sony KDS-60A2000 may be worth the extra cost.
Pros: Lively 1,080p display, huge amount of picture-adjustment options
Cons: More expensive than competing models, lacks picture-in-picture features, no CableCARD slot
Warranty
