Sony KDL-46XBR3 46-Inch 1,080p LCD HDTV

Date Published: 2/19/08

The KDL-46XBR3 BRAVIA is Sony's top 46-inch LCD HDTV model, and its exquisite 1,080p performance may make it worth its high price tag. Keep in mind that the KDL-46XBR3 uses the same LCD panel and image processor as the KDL-46XBR2, which carries an MSRP of $300 less. The differences are mainly cosmetic, as the XBR3 sports a piano-black finish, while the XBR2 has a silver finish that can be customized with optional colored bezels. The XBR3 also comes with an 18-month warranty, compared to the XBR2's 12 months.

Images come to life on the KDL-46XBR3, which has a native resolution of 1,920X1,080. The KDL-46XBR3 has an impressive 7,000:1 contrast ratio (the measure of the intensity of the brightest white compared to the darkest black), which only emphasizes the deep blacks this set can achieve. There is also a light sensor that adjusts screen brightness depending on the amount of ambient light.

The KDL-46XBR3 does a fantastic job displaying high-definition content. This set can show every pixel of 1,080i high-definition programming, and it then upgrades the signal to progressive scan for smooth, flicker-free viewing. With its three HDMI inputs, all of which are compatible with 1,080p sources, the KDL-46XBR3 is an ideal display for a Blu-ray Disc or HD DVD player. If you are not ready to jump to one of these new disc formats, you should at the least consider purchasing an up-conversion DVD player that shows regular DVD at 720p or 1,080i.

Unfortunately, the audio performance does not keep pace with the video, with the stereo speakers producing an unimpressive 11 watts of output per channel. Options include three audio presets, automatic volume leveling and simulated surround sound, but we recommend you connect the KDL-46XBR3 to a home theater system and speakers via the TV's optical digital audio output.

While it has a QAM tuner, the KDL-46XBR3 lacks a CableCARD slot, so check with your cable provider for QAM compatibility. Sony includes a handy universal remote control that illuminates for operating in the dark, and it has direct-access buttons for use with connected components. The list of convenience features is extensive, including an on-screen program guide, a favorite channel memory and a picture freeze. Like most Sony televisions, the KDL-46XBR3 doesn't have PIP or split-screen options.

The KDL-46XBR3's broad selection of inputs and outputs make it well suited to serve as the center of a high-end entertainment center. This LCD TV has the three HDMI inputs (one on the side panel), two component video inputs, a PC input for surfing the internet and playing games on the big screen, the optical digital audio output and an S-video input, among others.

Video quality doesn't get much better than this. If you prefer the glossy black finish to the KDL-46XBR2's silver, and if you don't consider the lack of PIP and a CableCARD slot to be a deal-breaker, the Sony KDL-46XBR3 makes a top-quality LCD HDTV purchase.

Pros: Stunning 1,080p display, lovely cabinet finish, strong connectivity includes PC input and three 1,080p-compatible HDMI connections, 18-month warranty
Cons: No PIP options, bland audio, no CableCARD slot, expensive

Warranty
18 months parts and labor
