Sony KDL-40XBR2 40-inch BRAVIA 1,080p LCD HDTV

Sony jumps into the 1,080p LCD fray with its 40-inch KDL-40XBR2, a high-end BRAVIA HDTV that offers exquisite performance in a great-looking cabinet. This set is capable of displaying 1,080p content, so it would be ideal for use with one of the new Blu-ray high-definition disc players that are now appearing on the market.
With a native resolution of 1,920X1,080, the KDL-40XBR2 can display every pixel of 1,080i HD content. A host of image enhancement and noise reduction functions present a solid, detailed picture, and a light sensor automatically adjusts the screen's brightness to present optimal images in any ambient light conditions. The KDL-40XBR2 excels at producing deep blacks, so you won't experience any of the fuzzy shadows or noticeable grays common to large LCD TVs.
This set produces an exceptional high-definition picture, but standard-definition images are decidedly unimpressive. However, considering the KDL-40XBR2's 1,080p capabilities and premium price, you are probably ready to make the jump to HD if you are purchasing this set, so the standard-definition performance won't likely be an issue.
With an integrated QAM tuner, the KDL-40XBR2 can show basic digital cable content without the need for a separate cable box. Unfortunately, there is no CableCARD slot, so you will still need the box to enable interactive services. Continuing a curious Sony trend, this set also lacks any PIP functions, although it does have a full-screen freeze. A universal remote is included in the package, and it is generally well laid out. However, the remote lacks illuminated or glow buttons, which does not sound like a big deal until you try to operate your TV in the dark.
In addition to great HD performance, the KDL-40XBR2 has style to spare. The wide-format LCD screen is surrounded by a silver bezel, which is in turn surrounded by a transparent frame to create a "floating" illusion. In addition, Sony offers five optional color bezels (white, black, blue, brown and red) that can be added to customize the monitor for your particular decor.
The KDL-40XBR2 also does well in the connectivity department, starting with three HDMI inputs (two on the rear panel, one on the side) that are compatible with 1,080p sources. Other inputs include two RF inputs, a PC input for playing games and surfing the internet on the big screen, two component video inputs and an optical digital audio output.
The price is high, but this 1,080p HDTV won't disappoint. The Sony KDL-40XBR2 is a strong performer that will be a stunning presence in your living room.
Pros: Exceptional 1,080p HD performance, beautiful cabinet with optional color frames, broad connection selection
Cons: No split-screen or PIP options, no CableCARD slot, remote lacks illumination
