Sony KDL-40V2500 40-Inch BRAVIA 1,080p LCD HDTV
Date Published: 7/15/08
If you long for a 40-inch Sony LCD HDTV but don't have the budget for one of the top-end XBR models, you should give serious consideration to the lower-tier KDL-40V2500. This conservatively styled BRAVIA TV lacks some of the features found on the premium models, but it is by no means a stripped-down HDTV.
Like its more expensive kin, the KDL-40V2500 uses Sony's proprietary BRAVIA engine to achieve full 1,080p resolution. This TV can show every pixel of 1,080i high-definition broadcasts, and it will even upgrade the signal to progressive format. This results in a flicker-free picture that excels at rendering motion, especially in movies and sports. Sony's Live Color Creation System delivers rich, accurate colors, and the contrast ratio of up to 7:000:1 is a direct result of the KDL-40V2500's deep blacks.
With its integrated ATSC tuner, you don't need an external HD receiver to watch over-the-air or cable high-definition broadcasts. There is also a QAM tuner, and if it is compatible with your digital cable service provider, you can also eliminate the cable box from your home entertainment center. However, you'll need the box for interactive and premium services, as the KDL-40V2500 lacks a CableCARD slot.
With two HDMI inputs that accept 1,080p sources, the KDL-40V2500 is a great display for watching the new Blu-ray and HD DVD discs. We would have liked to see a third HDMI input like on the top-of-the-line models, but unless you are a serious videophile, two will probably be sufficient. The KDL-40V2500 is also armed with a pair of HD component video inputs, an optical digital audio output, a single RF input and an S-video input, among others. In addition, this LCD HDTV sports a PC input, so you can surf the internet and play games on the big screen.
Stereo speakers are located below the screen, and they produce a lukewarm 10 watts of output per channel. Audio options include simulated surround sound and automatic volume leveling, as well as three audio presets, but we recommend connecting the KDL-40V2500 to a home theater system and speakers via the optical digital audio output. This set has a picture freeze function, favorite channel memory and a simple but non-universal remote control, but like other Sony TVs, it lacks any PIP or split-screen functions.
If you are looking for the quality of a Sony flat-panel TV but can't afford the top-end models, the KDL-40V2500 is a smart compromise between performance and price.
Pros: 1,080p display, two 1,080p-compatible HDMI inputs, deep blacks and accurate colors, PC input
Cons: No PIP options, lackluster audio performance, single RF input, no CableCARD slot
