Sony KDL-32S3000 32-inch LCD HDTV
Date Published: 9/26/07
The Sony KDL-32S3000 is a set that has a sharp picture, is very good at standard-definition video processing ,and even offers a few extra bells and whistles that you normally don't find on entry-level models. However, this 32-inch set lacks a few features that might make you consider stepping up to Sony’s other LCD sets.
For one thing, while the price is attractive, the KDL-32S3000 is only a 720p model. As this is a 32-inch set, which would be good for an office, den, or perhaps a bedroom model, the 720p resolution will still be fine. If you're primarily watching HD content over-the-air, or from a cable/satellite step top box, then this model will be perfectly adequate. But if you’re planning to go full HD with Blu-ray or HD-DVD, you should consider a 1080p model instead.
But not everyone wants a huge set in their living rooms, and those that decide to go with a 32-inch model are limited, because the step-up series don't always feature sets in this smaller size. If you did require multiple HDMI inputs, the KDL-32S3000 features just two in the rear of the set. Fortunately, the set has numerous other connectivity options, including two component video inputs, one S-Video input and three composite video inputs. (Unfortunately, only one of the composite video inputs is located on the side.) On the plus side, the set does feature a headphone output, which is always a nice feature to include.
We liked the results with the BRAVIA Engine video processing system and the Live Color Creation, which delivered a smooth picture with very vibrant colors. While this model lacks some of the advanced features of Sony’s step-up models, its picture is no slouch. We were disappointed that this model didn't offer nearly the level of picture controls as some of the other models. If you're looking to fine-tune color temperature for example, this set is limited to the four preset modes. Fortunately, you can adjust the different picture modes independently for each input.
This set lacks the style and flash of some of the competing models, with a matte black bezel that is far from the thinnest around. Even the speaker strip below the screen is a bit thicker than on some other models. We did like how the sets twin speakers handled the audio, and this includes the virtual Dolby Digital and S-FORCE Front Surround Sound, which can emulate the multi-channel experience. And at a mere 32-pounds this set can be moved around fairly comfortably--something you'd never want to try with a 42-inch or larger panel.
Pros: Great price for a Sony model, headphone output, good sounding speakers Cons: Not the thinnest bezel design, only 720p
