Sony KDF-E60A20 60-inch rear-projection LCD HDTV

Date Published: 5/21/08

The KDF-E60A20 is a 60-inch Sony Grand WEGA rear-projection LCD HDTV that combines strong performance, appealing features and a range of connectivity options.

The silver cabinet has a sleek design, with a dark silver border and flanking stereo speakers. The silver base contains quick-access audio/video inputs and a headphone jack hidden behind a pressure-release door, while control buttons are out of sight along the side of the cabinet.

The integrated high-definition tuner provides direct access to HD content, and standard content is up-converted to 768p. Movies receive special treatment through reverse 3:2 pulldown, which smoothes out the action in motion-heavy scenes. Standard 4:3 content can be watched in any of four widescreen modes, while widescreen content is available in two formats. Picture settings are automatically memorized for each input as well as the cable or antenna, making it easy to customize the video output.

The internal stereo speakers are rated at 12 watts of output per channel. The audio has three presets for quick adjustments, and it also offers volume stabilization so commercials and programs are heard at the same volume.

Other audio options include simulated surround sound and separate adjustments of treble, bass, and midrange tones. Convenience features include an adjustable sleep timer, memory for up to 16 favorite channels, access to an on-screen program guide and labeling of channels and inputs.

The KDF-E60A20 has a CableCARD slot on the rear panel, making it possible to do without a separate cable box. In addition, the rear panel has two RF inputs for an antenna and cable, two audio/video inputs, two S-video inputs, two component video inputs, an HDMI connection with digital audio, an optical digital audio output and a fixed/variable audio output.

The long, slender universal remote control has a slide panel concealing less frequently used buttons for managing associated components. All of the buttons illuminate for easy operation in the dark.

Brightness and clarity are excellent on the Sony KDF-E60A20, which has a native resolution of 1,366X768. The picture is richly detailed, and colors look natural and realistic.
