Sony KD-36FS170 36-inch digital WEGA TV
Date Published: 10/26/07
Sony's KD-36FS170 is a 36-inch WEGA TV that can display both analog and digital signals without a separate receiver, so it is future-ready for the 2009 switch to all-digital broadcasts. Keep in mind that while the KD-36FS170 is a digital television, it cannot display HDTV. The FD Trinitron flat picture tube reduces glare and enhances image accuracy. The silver cabinet is attractive without appearing gaudy, with stereo speakers flanking the screen and a small door hiding controls and a set of composite video inputs.
As we've come to expect from Sony, the KD-36FS170 produces a bright and crisp picture. A 3-line digital comb filter reduces or eliminates dot crawl and rainbow effects, while velocity modulation scanning keeps edges sharp. All input signals are presented at 480i. This TV has distinct digital and analog modes, and you can quickly switch between modes via a button on the included remote control. When in digital mode, you have a choice of four picture format modes.
The KD-36FS170's audio system is rated at 5 watts of output per channel, and it does a decent if underpowered job presenting music and speech to accompany the visuals. You can save up to 21 favorite channels (16 digital and 5 analog) for quick flipping, and the KD-36FS170 offers a digital program guide (where available) to find out what is on. Other convenience features include channel and input labeling, parental V-chip controls and a 90-minute sleep timer.
The input/output selection is limited for a 36-inch television. In addition to the front-panel composite video input, the KD-36FS170 has analog and digital RF inputs, a second composite video input, an S-video input and a component video input, all on the rear panel. There are no digital-to-digital HDMI or DVI inputs as you might find on some competitors. There also is no option for using external speakers, as this 36-inch TV does not have any audio output jacks. The remote control is not a universal model, but this does simplify operating the TV.
With its digital capabilities and attractive picture, the KD-36FS170 proves to be good TV purchase, despite its relative lack of other advanced features.
Pros: Digital tuner, crisp picture
Cons: Low audio power, few advanced features, no HDMI or DVI inputs
