Sony's KD-32FS170 is a value-price 32-inch WEGA TV that is intended to ease the transition from analog to the new digital TV standards, currently scheduled for February 2009. The internal tuner can receive digital TV (DTV, not high-definition) and standard analog signals, eliminating the need for an additional tuner for digital content, but the display is only at the 480i level. Thus, the KD-32FS170 is a digital television, but it is not an HDTV. A button on the remote is used to switch from analog to digital mode as needed.

The picture on the KD-32FS170 looks bright and clear, especially when displaying flicker-free digital content. A 3-line digital comb filter works to eliminate interference on signals received from the RF and composite video inputs. The flat picture tube minimizes glare and distortion.

The flanking stereo speakers produce 5 watts per channel of audio output. Among the KD-32FS170's convenience features are a favorite channel memory, a choice of four screen modes, four video presets, an on/off timer that can be set for two events and channel and input labeling.

The KD-32FS170 input/output selection is relatively basic, as the rear panel offers two RF inputs (digital and analog), one composite video input, one S-video input and one component video input. There is also a front-panel composite video input for the quick connection of a camcorder or video game console.

An increasing number of manufacturers are producing televisions like the KD-32FS170, which offer compatibility with both analog and digital signals. While HDTVs hog the spotlight in the digital TV marketplace, non-HD digital televisions are a much more reasonable purchase option for many TV shoppers. With its competitive price and good performance, the KD-32FS170 is well positioned in advance of the switch to all-digital broadcasts in 2009.
