Sony HT-9950M home theater system
Date Published: 1/8/08
Power, capacity, and high-tech features: The Sony HT-9950M has it all. This is quite a system. While all home theaters come with a DVD player or even a changer, the HT-9950M has a stand-alone 400-disc DVD/CD/SACD mega changer. Has any manufacturer ever offered a home theater package like this?
The progressive scan player features an HDMI interface for a pristine digital connection between components. This is a high-end disc player, with features such as instant replay, block noise reduction, and SmoothScan and SmoothSlow modes, along with full parental controls.
The receiver is a separate component from the changer. It has processing for Dolby Digital EX and DTS-ES, in addition to DTS, Dolby Digital, and Dolby Pro Logic II. The internal amplifier provides an impressive 140 watts into six channels. The subwoofer has a built-in amplifier that provides 160 watts, giving this system a total of 1,000 watts of playback power. The included AM/FM tuner has 30 total presets.
The HT-9950M comes with an array of speakers that work surprisingly well together despite the mix-and-match collection of drivers. Each of the front speakers has a 3-1/4-inch woofer and a 1-inch tweeter, while the center channel uses a pair of 2-1/4-inch full-range drivers. Each surround satellite uses a single full-range 3-1/4-inch driver. While different speaker components can cause problems with transitions across the soundstage, these are remarkably well balanced. The subwoofer has a 10-inch driver mounted in a bass-reflex cabinet. The HT-9950M is an impressive system with a long feature list and rewarding sound quality.Warranty
