Sony HDR-UX1 DVD HD Camcorder
Date Published: 6/24/08
The first camcorder to record high-definition video to DVD, the Sony HDR-UX1 uses AVCHD technology and offers many of the same features as Sony's HDR-SR1 hard-disk HD camcorder. Like that unit, the HDR-UX1 offers a large 2.1-megapixel ClearVID CMOS sensor and a Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T lens with 10X optical/80X digital zoom. On the other hand, this model records to disc rather than a built-in hard drive. The HDR-UX1 is compatible with DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW and DVD+R DL (Dual Layer), so your options are extensive.
The DVD format offers advantages and disadvantages over a hard disk, so it is important that you determine your shooting and sharing preferences, especially considering the current editing limitations inherent with AVCHD. The ability to conveniently share discs with family and friends is a popular motivation for purchasing a DVD camcorder. However, to fully appreciate the HDR-UX1's incredible image clarity and superior multichannel audio, you'll need to play discs with HD content in a Blu-ray Disc player, which can cost a pretty penny.
Another drawback to the DVD format is the recording time. While a hard-disc camcorder can store hours of video footage, the HDR-UX1 can manage only 30 minutes of HD recordings per disc (and double that with the more expensive DL discs). If you're planning to record your child's school play or Little League game, you're going to need an ample supply of blank discs on hand.
DVD camcorders are traditionally the domain of point-and-shoot enthusiasts looking for ease of use above most everything else. By utilizing the AVCHD format, however, the HDR-UX1 is also appealing to more accomplished videographers. The Easycam mode makes this unit effortless to operate, and it also offers a selection of auto-exposure (AE) program modes, along with spot focus and spot metering controls. If you desire more manual control, the HDR-UX1 has a convenient manual control ring for making adjustments to focus and white balance. As with most Sony camcorders, other manual controls can be accessed only via the 3-1/2-inch touchscreen LCD. Unfortunately, the inevitable build-up of fingerprints on the touchscreen makes it doubly difficult to manually obtain a sharp focus, which is of much greater importance when shooting in HD.
The HDR-UX1 offers solid low-light performance that can only be bested by an HD camcorder with a three-CCD imager setup. As a digital stills camera, the unit also performs well, capturing stills of a maximum resolution of 2,304X1,728 to Memory Stick Duo media.
While we can't fault the image and audio performance of AVCHD, until the popular editing software systems offer compatibility with the new technology, you'll be limited to basic editing functions using the included Sony software. Despite this, if you're looking for cutting-edge technology, the Sony HDR-UX1 offers great value in the small but rapidly growing market of HD camcorders.
Pros: Excellent video performance, Dolby 5.1 surround sound, incredibly easy to use
Cons: Lacks optical image stabilization, AVCHD format not yet supported by most editing software, touchscreen LCD quickly gathers fingerprints and smudges, HD discs can only be played on a Blu-ray Disc player
