Sony HDR-HC1 high-definition MiniDV camcorder

Date Published: 9/12/07

The Sony HDR-HC1 is one of the smallest and lightest consumer-level high-definition camcorders available, with full 1,080i resolution.

With an MSRP of $2,000, it is also one of the most affordable HD camcorders out there. Despite its formidable specifications and feature list, the HDR-HC1 remains a compact model that handles comfortably. It also delivers some quite stunning video and stills images.

The HDR-HC1 features Sony's CMOS imaging sensor device, a 1/3-inch chip that delivers 1.98 effective megapixels in 16:9 widescreen HDV (high-definition video) mode. The optical suite includes a Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T lens with 10X optical/120X digital zoom function, as well as a digital image stabilization system.

The quality of the HD recordings is simply outstanding. Images are incredibly crisp, with no bleeding of colors and extremely low amounts of video noise present. As well as HDV, the HDR-HC1 can also record and play back standard-definition video on ordinary MiniDV cassettes.

The quality of the digital stills captured by this camcorder is equally impressive. The HDR-HC1 records stills to Sony's proprietary Memory Stick Duo at a maximum resolution of 1,920X1,440, and the sharpness and color saturation are excellent.

The camera features a pop-up flash and advanced stills features such as a burst mode for capturing consecutive images, as well as an exposure bracketing function. The camcorder can be connected directly to a PictBridge-compatible printer for hassle-free printing.

A 2-7/10-inch touchscreen LCD provides accurate framing as well as the always-handy spot focusing and spot metering controls. Simply press a part of the screen and the HDR-HC1 will automatically adjust focus or metering to that area. There is also a focus ring, as well as manual controls for shutter speed and white balance. Unfortunately, there is no manual control for aperture. The responsive automatic controls make this a simple camcorder to use, so even a novice will be able to capture stunning video and stills.

The HDR-HC1 will appeal to both point-and-shoot enthusiasts and serious home moviemakers, and the high-definition video produced is without equal.
