Sony Ericsson P990i GSM Mobile Phone

Date Published: 7/12/07

With video calling and a dial pad that flips down to reveal a full QWERTY keyboard, the Sony Ericsson P990i Smart Phone boasts features that are more than versatile. The screen is the most prominent feature of the phone, measuring in at 2.8 inches with 262,000 vibrant colors and running on the Symbian OS. Applications can be accessed through the jog dial or touched on the screen, and the ergonomics are solid and intuitive with raised buttons that are reasonably well spaced.

The P990i is a 3G device, utilizing the UMTS network, which permits speedy downloading and enhanced services. If you're conversing with a similarly equipped user, you can turn the camera to face you and chat with your caller visually. But the wireless connectivity doesn't stop there: You can also use infrared, Bluetooth and, if you're within range of an open Wi-Fi network, you can hop onto the Internet for free. This phone also supports push email, so messages are sent immediately rather than waiting to be pulled off your server.

The 2-megapixel camera generates above-average photos at various resolutions that can be played with using the editing feature and then saved on 60MB of internal memory. There is also a Memory Stick slot for expanded storage, which definitely comes in handy for music files. The MP3 player offers commendable performance and the ability to use songs as ring tones. With all of these features, there are surprisingly few complaints or flaws other than the price.

As for the phone, call quality is exceptional and you can expect an impressive nine hours of talk time and two weeks of standby. Other features include: speakerphone, stopwatch, camera flash, business card scanner, and vibrating ringer. Overall, this is a very high-end phone with features that will please the most advanced gadget hounds.

Pros: 3G network, great screen, good MP3 player, video calling, Wi-Fi, design, QWERTY keyboard, battery life
Cons: price
