Sony DVP-NS75H up-conversion DVD player
Date Published: 1/9/08
The Sony DVP-NS75H is among the least-expensive single-disc DVD players to offer HDMI up-conversion. In addition to 480-line progressive scan display (480p), the DVP-NS75H supports 720p and 1,080i upscaling via the unit's HDMI digital-to-digital connection. The up-converted video has about double the resolution provided by an ordinary progressive scan DVD player, and considering the cost of first-generation Blu-ray and HD DVD players, the DVP-NS75H is an affordable and practical way to enjoy pseudo-HD performance from your existing library of movies.
Unfortunately, as with other Sony DVD players with HDMI output, the DVP-NS75H does not include an HDMI cable. This can significantly increase the ultimate purchase price, as a 6-foot HDMI cable can cost $100 or more. If you're not interested in taking advantage of the HDMI connection, this DVD player also offers the standard component video, composite video and S-video outputs for connection to just about any TV.
The audio quality of the DVP-NS75H is on par with the video. The player can route Dolby Digital and DTS surround sound signals to a compatible home theater receiver via its optical and coaxial digital audio outputs, and it also offers virtual surround sound. Playback features include a multiple disc resume function for up to six different titles, instant replay, custom parental controls and fast and slow playback.
Disc compatibility is another strong point, as the DVP-NS75H is compatible with DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, DVD+R DL (dual layer), SVCD, CD-R/RW and discs loaded with MP3 and JPEG files. Sony's Precision Drive 3 system manages to read discs that have become warped, scratched or otherwise damaged. A handy universal remote control is included in the package, although the DVP-NS75H responded sluggishly to remote commands.
