The DVP-NS55P/S is the least expensive model in Sony's line of single-disc DVD players, but it packs a lot of punch into its $70 MSRP. Whether you need a second DVD player for the bedroom, kitchen, or RV, or if you're looking for a low-cost addition to your primary home theater array, the DVP-NS55P/S delivers very good video and audio performance for a unit in this price range. The ultra-slim design and smart silver finish will look at home in a modern entertainment stack, and the unit is also available in black as model DVP-NS55P/B.
The DVP-NS55P/S features Sony's Precision Cinema progressive scan playback for optimal picture quality when connected to a digital TV via the component video output. Images appear sharp, with clean lines and little video noise or pixel distortion. The unit also is equipped with composite and S-video outputs for connecting to an analog TV.
This DVD player is compatible with a wide variety of DVD and CD formats. The DVP-NS55P/S can handle DVD-R/RW and DVD+R/RW, and Sony's excellent Precision Drive 3 anti-skip system is able read discs that are warped, scratched, or otherwise damaged. While other DVD players often struggle to read such discs, the DVP-NS55P/S handles them smoothly. This single-tray player is also compatible with a CD and CD-R/RW, and it can play MP3 digital audio files burned to recordable CD and DVD. In addition, the DVP-NS55P/S can be used to create digital slideshows from discs holding JPEG images.
Playback features on the DVP-NS55P/S include a multiple disc resume function for up to six different titles, instant replay, custom parental controls, and fast and slow playback with audio. It also comes with a multibrand remote control. Via its optical and coaxial digital audio outputs, the DVP-NS55P/S enables you to route Dolby Digital and DTS surround sound signals to a compatible home theater receiver. For a very capable DVD player on a budget, the DVP-NS55P/S is a smart choice.
