Sony DVP-NS50P/B DVD player

Date Published: 1/9/08

The Sony DVP-NS50P/B is an impressive single-disc DVD player. Considering the MSRP of $80, this model delivers incredible video and audio performance and offers excellent disc compatibility, as well as all the playback features anyone is ever likely to need.

The slimline DVP-NS50P/B stands less than 2 inches in height and is finished in a smart black (it is also available in silver as model DVP-NS50P/S). It features Sony's Precision Cinema progressive scan output for optimal picture quality when hooked up to a digital TV. Images appear sharp with clean lines and little video noise or pixel distortion. The unit also offers composite and S-video outputs for connecting to just about any analog set.

Disc compatibility is a major plus with this player. In addition to DVD-Video, the DVP-NS50P/B comfortably handles DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, and VCD. Sony's Precision Drive 3 anti-skip system manages to play warped or damaged discs that other players usually struggle to read.

Music fans will appreciate the player's compatibility with CD and CD-R/RW, especially the MP3 playback facility. The menu option allows users to quickly scroll through and select digital music files using either the included remote control or the front-panel buttons. The DVP-NS50P/B can even create digital slideshows from content loaded onto JPEG picture CD.

The audio performance of the DVP-NS50P/B is also impressive for a player in this price range. The TV virtual surround sound feature offers five different modes for replicating surround sound over twin external speakers or those built into a stereo TV. Alternately, Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 surround sound signals can be routed from the player to a compatible A/V receiver via the optical and coaxial digital audio outputs.

The DVP-NS50P/B's playback options include resume play for up to six different discs, parental control memory for up to 40 discs, full 3:2 reverse pulldown, an instant replay feature, and a selection of playback speeds.

The Sony DVP-NS50P/B for the price offers outstanding video and audio performance and excellent disc compatibility.
