Date Published: 1/9/08
The DVP-FX705 is an entry-level model in Sony's line of portable DVD players. The unit is finished in a stylish brushed aluminum, yet it still retains a rugged feel. This is a slim, highly portable unit that is built to withstand the bumps and scrapes of frequent travel. The DVP-FX705 is lightweight as well, weighing in at about 1.5 pounds.
The DVP-FX705 offers a 7-inch display with a 16:9 aspect ratio, ideal for viewing movie DVD in their original widescreen presentation. The picture quality is very good, with excellent clarity and strong, accurate colors. Integrated stereo speakers deliver virtual surround sound, or the audio can be listened to in private via headphones. The player comes with a dual headphone output, so two people can enjoy a movie or music while sitting next to each other in the back of a car or in adjacent airplane seats.
The DVP-FX705 also comes with an AC adapter and a DC car battery adapter, so the kids can be entertained on long road trips without wearing down the battery. The rechargeable lithium-ion battery offers about 3 hours of life, depending on the settings selected. That's enough to enjoy all but the longest DVD-Video.
The DVP-FX705 can double as a home DVD player. It lacks progressive scan output, but the unit can be connected to a TV using the S-video or composite video outputs.
Whether the unit is used at home or on the road, it offers very good disc compatibility. As well as standard DVD-Video and audio CD, the DVP-FX705 reads DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, and CD-R/RW, including those loaded with MP3 digital audio files or JPEG images. The DVP-FX705 comes complete with a compact yet easy-to-use remote control. This is a solid portable player.
Despite an MSRP of about $300, the Sony DVP-FX705 offers all the quality and features one should expect from the Sony brand.
