Sony DVP-CX777ES DVD/SACD 400-disc changer
Date Published: 2/6/08
The Sony DVP-CX777ES mega DVD changer can hold up to 400 DVD, CD and SACD discs, in any order or combination. Anyone with a large home entertainment library can imagine how handy it would be to store an entire collection in a single player that allows quick access via an on-screen navigation guide. While the DVP-CX777ES combines this convenience with excellent audio and video reproduction, as well as a functional on-screen graphic user interface, it also exhibits some annoying glitches that distract from the overall appeal.
The DVP-CX777ES has a stylish silver finish that should complement modern home theater set-ups and advanced TVs. Sony's Precision Cinema progressive scan delivers top quality video images, and the audio performance is similarly excellent. The DVP-CX777ES even plays SACD, a high-resolution, multichannel audio format that delivers incredible sound. Music is represented extremely clean and sharp, as though the band has taken the stage in your living room.
The DVP-CX777ES's graphic user interface automatically loads information from most discs. It even includes the useful DVD Jacket Picture function, which displays on-screen an image from the movie jacket, as well as the title. Alternatively, you can manually load a scene from the movie that, to you, best represents the DVD. The DVP-CX777ES allows you to connect a computer keyboard to manually type in disc information. Sony's Precision Drive 2 does an excellent job playing scratched or otherwise damaged discs, and this DVD changer also works quietly.
Unfortunately, it can be frustratingly slow at loading the disc explorer. This is compounded by the DVP-CX777ES's insistence on playing the last disc accessed when it powers on. The universal remote control is also disappointing. The buttons are small and poorly laid out, and many of the controls lack one-touch access. It is easy to recommend the Sony DVP-CX777ES DVD changer for audio and video performance, but less so for its ease of use.
Pros: Enormous capacity, excellent video and audio playback, 5-year warranty
Cons: Frustrating to operate, poorly designed remote control, doesn't play DVD-Audio
