Sony DCR-TRV480 camcorder

Date Published: 2/7/08

The DCR-TRV480 uses Sony's proprietary Digital8 camcorder format to record digitally to analog 8mm and Hi8 videotapes. More importantly, it is backward compatible, so users can continue to enjoy all of their old recordings stored on analog 8mm and Hi8 tapes.

Like last year's DCR-TRV460, the DCR-TRV480 offers a 20X optical/990X digital zoom lens and a digital image stabilization system, albeit in a restyled, slightly smaller body. The unit's 2-1/2-inch swivel LCD screen doubles as a touch panel for accessing the camera's menu system. While it certainly cuts down on buttons and controls littering the camcorder body, the touchscreen can initially be confusing and may take a while to master.

The DCR-TRV480 records digital stills and MPEG1 movies to Memory Stick. The camera also offers USB streaming, programmed exposure modes, a selection of digital effects and faders, manual focus override, and a battery that can record up to 12 hours on a single charge.
