Sony DCR-TRV280 Digital8 camcorder
Date Published: 2/8/08
The DCR-TRV280 is a stripped-down version of the Sony DCR-TRV480. Both models use Sony's proprietary Digital8 format to digitally record to standard (analog) 8mm and Hi8 videotapes. The unit is also somewhat backward compatible, so users can continue to enjoy old home recordings stored on analog Hi8 tapes (but not 8mm).
The DCR-TRV280 offers the same optical system as the more expensive DCR-TRV480, including a 20X optical/990X digital zoom lens and a digital image stabilization system. On this model, however, the 2-1/2-inch swivel screen LCD is used only for framing shots rather than for accessing the camera's menu system as well. The advantage of that is the greater speed at which it is possible to make adjustments to catch fleeting shots.
The DCR-TRV280 offers excellent battery life, recording for up to 12 hours on a single charge, and USB streaming capability. The unit also has program AE modes and a selection of titles and faders. Sony has not included a Memory Stick slot for capturing stills, so they are saved directly to tape.
