Sony DCR-DVD205 DVD Camcorder

Date Published: 7/15/08

In the current line-up of Sony DVD camcorders, the basic but effective DCR-DVD205 sits toward the low end, one rung up from the entry-level DCR-DVD105. This unit is still aimed squarely at point-and-shoot enthusiasts, but if you are looking for improved video performance and a few extra features, this camcorder might be the one for you.

As an updated version of the DCR-DVD203, the Sony DCR-DVD205 retains the ease of use we've come to expect from Sony camcorders. At the same time, the newer model improves on its predecessor's overall picture quality. Sony has also reduced the size of the DCR-DVD205, making it even more portable.

With a larger CCD than the DCR-DVD105, the DCR-DVD205 produces video with enhanced color saturation and less noise. The imager delivers 1.07 gross megapixels, which translates to 690,000 effective pixels for video. The 12X optical/800X digital zoom is supported by digital image stabilization.

The DCR-DVD205 can record to DVD-R/RW and DVD+RW, which gives you some flexibility when choosing blank media. On particular advantage of DVD+RW is that no finalization is needed, so you can instantly play back your recordings on many home DVD players and computers. The DCR-DVD205 can take also capture still images, but with no Memory Stick slot, they must be saved to disc.

Another improvement on this model is the 2-7/10-inch wide-format LCD touchscreen monitor. In addition to framing and reviewing widescreen video, the touchscreen provides access to the menu and manual focus controls. If you're looking for an array of manual controls beyond focus, picture effects and faders, you'll be disappointed. As with most Sony DV camcorders, the DCR-DVD205 excels in automatic mode, and the Easy Handycam button switches off all the controls except those essential for recording video.

The Sony DCR-DVD205 is a simple DV camcorder to operate, and we feel that the improved picture quality over the DCR-DVD105 warrants the extra $50 in price.

Pros:  Point-and-shoot simplicity, improved picture quality over low-end model
Cons:  Few manual controls, limited stills features

Warranty
90 days labor, 1 year parts
