The Sony DAV-X1 is much more than a compact stereo--it's a 2.1 home theater system. This rather amazing minisystem features DVD compatibility and progressive scan output, coupled together with a pair of stereo speakers and a separate subwoofer.

In addition, the DAV-X1 boasts an HDMI interface, which provides a high-resolution digital-to-digital audio and video (720p or 1,080i) connection in a single cable.

The DAV-X1 is compatible with DVD-Video, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, DVD-R DL, SACD, CD and CD-R/RW, as well as MP3 files burned to disc. There is built-in decoding for Dolby Digital and DTS, and Sony's S-Force Pro 2.1 creates a surround experience with just the two stereo speakers. Each speaker has a pair of 2-inch drivers in a magnetically shielded bass-reflex cabinet, while the magnetically shielded subwoofer employs a pair of 6-inch woofers for a solid, tight sound. The system's digital tuner provides crystal-clear radio reception, with presets for 10 AM and 20 FM stations.

In addition to the HDMI connection, the DAV-X1 has component video, composite video and S-video outputs. The system also has coaxial and optical digital audio inputs, an optical digital audio output and a pair of A/V inputs. The supplied remote control will work on many brands of televisions.
