Sony Cybershot DSC-V3 digital camera
Date Published: 5/9/05Sony's Cybershot DSC-V3 is definitely designed for the experienced photographer. It looks and feels like a 35mm camera, it has a high resolution--and it has a high price tag. However, the DSC-V3 also provides something very few high-end digital cameras offer--great versatility.
The DSC-V3 features a 7.2-megapixel resolution, which will produce extremely large prints. However, this model can also scale its resolution down to 640x480 for e-mail. You can even perform some photo-editing features directly from the camera, which is an easy process because of the DSC-V3's 2.5-inch LCD. The LCD offers high resolution and easy viewing in a variety of lighting conditions.
Experienced photographers will appreciate the DSC-V3's extensive list of manual-control features, including shutter priority or aperture priority. With the DSC-V3's focusing technologies, the camera uses five focus points to find the subject for the most accurate auto-focus. You can also manually select any of the five focus points to create an effect. The DSC-V3 has a sharp 4X optical zoom lens, and you can select from a variety of add-on conversion lenses (for an additional cost).
The DSC-V3 performs especially well in low-light conditions, thanks to Sony technologies that use laser tracking to aid in low-light focusing and that reduce the effects of camera shake with slow shutters. However, if you shoot regularly in low light, you might want to buy an add-on external flash, because the DSC-V3's built-in flash isn't as powerful as we'd like to see in a high-end camera.
Photo quality seems to be very good in a variety of lighting conditions; just about what you'd expect from a high-end camera.
If you choose the DSC-V3, just plan on adding a large memory card and a second battery ($50) to your budget. The DSC-V3 uses only a proprietary rechargeable battery, and its battery life is only average at best.
The DSC-V3 remains easy to use, despite all of its advanced features. Few digital cameras in this price range can appeal to such a wide range of photographers. If you're a beginning photographer, the DSC-V3 might be overkill. But if you're looking for a camera that can grow with you as you gain more photography skills, the Sony DSC-V3 is a great choice.
Pros: Easy to use high-end camera, good versatility, good low-light performance
