Snapper 8.5-hp Snow Blower 8526E

Date Published: 10/5/07

The Snapper 8526E is the least expensive of Snapper's large-frame snow blowers and is a blower that's big enough to take on even the heaviest snowfalls and biggest drifts. Weighing in at a hefty 248 pounds, this heavy-duty little monster is ready to take on whatever winter pumps out.

Equipped with an 8.5-hp Briggs & Stratton PowerBuilt Snow OHV engine, this machine offers the minimum amount of power that we recommend for taking on heavy snowfalls in the snowiest climates. Its clearing path measures 26 inches -- sufficient for fairly fast clearing, even when snow is falling quickly. Six speeds forward and two reverse provide all the versatility of machines that are far larger and allow you to match your rate of collection to varying snow conditions. The 8526E even offers the much-touted first-gear creeper speed. This slow speed gives this model the time needed to process the heaviest and deepest of snows.

Like all large-frame Snapper snow blowers, the 8526E offers a 14-inch auger and a 4-blade steel impeller. Electric start is standard issue, as are the 15.5-inch tires, which can be equipped with optional chains if you so desire. Other options include a headlight, drift cutter and snow cab to protect you from the elements.

The chute on this model rotates 200 degrees and is capable of throwing snow up to 40 feet. There is, however, no remote chute deflector.

For those attempting to keep costs down while preparing for their first season in a very snowy region, this model makes a lot of sense. If you have a bit more money to spend, the only thing we might suggest is stepping up to the Snapper 9528E. This model costs about $250 more and offers Briggs & Stratton's Intek engine, which is a bit more reliable in extremely cold temperatures.

Pros: Heavy machine is base-line choice for very snowy climates, 26-inch clearing path, creeper speed is excellent in very heavy snow
Cons: Brigg & Stratton's Intek engine may be more reliable in extremely cold weather than this model's Powerbuilt Snow OHV engine
