The Snapper 2812523BVE riding mower has many features that will appeal to folks with larger lawns, but maneuverability isn't one of them.

Snapper, currently owned by Briggs & Stratton, makes a wide variety of rear-engine riding mowers for cutting lawns from 1/2 to 2 acres. They have nine models with cut widths ranging from 28 to 42 inches. The model known as 2812523BVE is representative of the good value of this line. Powered by a 12.5-hp Briggs & Stratton engine, this model has a narrower cut of just 28 inches, but it gives you options on what to do with the cut grass. You can send it out the side of the cutting deck, send it through a side shoot to the back and into optional twin-bags, or you can keep it within the deck until the blade (singular) converts it into mulch (also an option). The Hi-Vac deck design makes this model a very good choice for folks who prefer to bag.

The limitation is that all of the Snapper riders take 28 inches to turn around. Some of the other riders reviewed can turn in less than half the space -- even most lawn tractors don't need more than 18 inches for a 180-degree turn. But this may not be a limitation for you if your lawns are long and relatively straight with room to turn around and the ends. If it's not a concern, the Snapper riders otherwise are a good value.

The 2812523BVE isn't a speed-demon, but will mow forward at 1 to 4.6 mph or in reverse at up to 1.9 mph. Shifting the 5-speed transmission is easy -- just move the lever to the desired notch, no clutch required. The motor's anti-vibration system (AVS) makes the ride a little smoother on the driver. The overhead valve (OHV) engine is quieter than many other comparable engines.

At 314 pounds, you won't want to turn this mower up on end every day, but the end-stand feature is handy for cleaning, maintenance and off-season storage. We found it a handy feature for those with garages that are already too full. Just make sure you first read the owner's manual about emptying fuel tanks.

Overall, the Snapper 2812523BVE riding mower is a good machine that, while it won't turn on a dime, will with proper care cut your larger lawns for a decade or more.
