Snapper 150Z 24/50 zero-turn mower

Date Published: 4/11/08

Snapper's 150Z series of zero-turn mowers include many of the features of the company's high-end machines into a compact, powerful mower.

Before one even rides the 150Z, you'll notice the size of this machine; even when it is equipped with its 50-inch cutting deck, the 150Z won't hog space in storage, and its compact design reduces the weight of the mower. Thanks to this efficient design, you'll rarely find yourself lacking for power from the 24-hp 2-cylinder Briggs & Stratton engine. On moderate hills, there is barely any hesitation, and even on steeper angles, the 150Z remains strong and balanced. We are also impressed with the evenness of the cut when cruising uphill; for a light machine, the 150Z has surprisingly stable control at faster speeds.

This machine also features a smooth control system. The pneumatically dampened control levers are excellent, even on tricky downhill turns. A cast-iron front axle helps stabilize turns and makes this compact mower feels very sturdy. As with all zero-turn mowers, the ability to pivot in place makes navigating a lawn strewn with obstacles a much easier task. The 150Z's compact design makes it simple to get close to obstacles without ever feeling like you are mowing blindly. The adjustable deck is easy to manipulate and the easy-to-read cutting height indicator is less enigmatic than those found on some other mowers, although with a maximum clearance of 3.75 inches, this deck may struggle with tall roots and grass.

While it is not exactly cheap by mower standards, the 150Z is a lot of machine for your dollar. While it is ideal in a residential setting, the 150Z would also fare well in most commercial mowing situations. Unfortunately for professionals (and residential users, for that matter), however, the compatible add-ons are somewhat expensive. That said, though, Snapper's custom twin-bag grass collector system for the 150Z is very easy to attach and does a great job capturing all the discharge from the mowing deck. Other options include headlights, a dump cart and a mulching kit. By their nature, zero-turn mowers lack the versatility of lawn and garden tractors, but the available attachments do add value to an already high-quality mower.

In the 150Z, Snapper has successfully brought the main features of their commercial mowers into a residential machine without cutting any corners in the, no pun intended.

Pros: Compact size, smooth controls, strong engine, even cut, easy-to-read controls, lightweight design
Cons: Expensive add-ons, not as aggressive as larger zero-turn mowers for commercial purposes, small 3-gallon fuel tank, limited range of cutting heights

Warranty
2 years, limited (residential)
